The Barkada Boys.. Inspired from people I knew,

The Barkada Boys .. Inspired from people I knew..
It was after a Jr high dance.. Everyone was getting rides home. Now remember  this is the late seventies, the beginnings of Gang war fare in The South side.. Well a few of us dressed in the Barkada uniform.. The khaki jackets with the khaki jeans or black dickies,, and of course we all the Bruce Lee kung fu shoes that wore out after a week of wearing them.. But they looked cool?? right. well it's me Joe, Jonas, and myself.. walking down or up Del Sol Blvd.. Well if your not familiar with that long street.. Its a history of Gang bangers or families live on that street and yes,, they are ruthless and deadly.. Well we are laughing and giggling acting like young fools,. when suddenly over a fence or what? Comes out this buffed out , tatted up Cholo.. and he has the loudest sounding shut gun cocked and loaded and pointing at us,, Asking if we know who the dee's were? We said who? Of course he's angry ,, You know the dude  in fact you look just like him.. Yup,., Mr Me... ? of course I'm not laughing because any false move or words and we are dead ? right.. so I said No,, we don't hang with him.. even though we did.. He said.. Ok chino's .. I tell you what.. if you see him or someone knows of him,, Let him know,, Del Sol eses are looking for him.. I said yeah sure.. He jumps back over the fence..But all of us are scared out of our wits.. I mean we knew the Dee's were gang bangers and such but we didn't know they had beefs with the Cholos.. Needless to say. we all ran home,, Joe said " Bro.... I m done with this gang look .. Its gonna get us killed someday.. and Joe and Jonas gave up on the look.. But not me? I was a rebel back in the day,. crazy and maybe had a death wish.. I continued to have the Pinoy Pride ,, get into fights and proclaim my Pinoy ancestry.. But it lasted maybe a year more.. I mean.. I saw too many close calls to continue that life style.. The times were changing.. There were less garage parties, because of drive bys.. there was less hanging out at Roberto's or the Wing.. or partying at the Pits.. Because of the danger.. I mean there was gang rape up on the Pits and the Police began controlling the area.. The area was also having massive illegal crossings.. I mean I saw that every morning at 0430 when I did my morning jog before school.. The innocence we once shared was over.. South Side had become a dangerous haven for drug dealers and gang bangers and illegal crossings.. The constant sirens and helicopters made the south side the bad side , the Dirty south side,, I know we enjoyed a lot of good times, but it soon changed with the increased border patrol presence and police activity, Geez we had drug raids on my street and many fights with neighbors.. MY truck was even being stolen right on my drive way,, But thanks to my neighbor who called me at midnight,, to say are u doing something with your truck  ? I said I was asleep why? Well man.. Its rolling down the drive way onto the street., So boom I come out with MY Nunchuks and what do you know.. Its my neighbors teenage kid who we used to baby sit as a young child.,. I was livid.. ~ I pressed charges because it was My prized lifted 4x4 Toyota.. But after a week or so He steals my next door neighbor Toyota and takes it Arizona where he is promptly arrested .. and I don't know what happened after that.. But one thing is for sure,, THE BARKADA BOYS for me was a short , and crazy phase in my life,, and I'm glad I don't or ever want to be called a Barkada Boy again,,, Its wasn't as glamorous as you think.. But those were young and dumb days as a youth in the once laid back South San Diego.. Nothing stays the same and for the South Bay residents , its a shame,, Because those great garage parties and school dances and house parties were some of the best memories of my youth,,, Its too bad,, in today's culture ,, today's society We don't see booming to the beat garage parties,,Well.. I still do them and my Conservative Old fashioned Neighbors love every minute until I shut down the booming beats.. The Barkada boys.. some fun memories but that fateful night with my three besties ,, changed everything we felt about gangs and how we were going to conduct ourselves.. In other words.. Those were days that were truly unique,,, and Wouldn't mind reliving those days again..But life doesn't work that way. All we have is stories and people like me that blog about the days we use to enjoy .. Until my flash back blog about our youths.. Take Care!!
